Shortly before my first solo trip, numerous thoughts were running through my head. Will I be bored or feel lonely? Can I overcome challenges alone and am I safe when I'm travelling alone? I can now tell you: I love solo travel! Many anxious thoughts were unfounded. Nevertheless, good preparation was helpful. After all, travelling on your own for the first time requires courage as you leave your comfort zone and take the plunge into a new adventure.
Freedom and independence: You don't have to compromise, you can do as you please.
Strengthening self-confidence: Overcoming challenges and fears strengthens self-confidence.
Self-awareness: Discover your preferences, needs, strengths and weaknesses that may have been hidden until now.
New contacts: Solo travellers meet locals and other travellers more easily, which can lead to interesting encounters and friendships.
More intense experience: No distractions from travel companions while exploring the destination.
Calm and serenity: No arguments or discussions.
Improve your language skills: You have to hold conversations yourself improving your language skills along the way.
Increased security risk: Risk of theft and assaults. Women who travel solo in particular may get unwanted male attention.
Solo Decisions: You have to depend on your own decision-making process and live with the outcome which may lead to self-doubt.
Loneliness: Once you start travelling on your own, you will discover whether this is for you or if you prefer company on future trips.
Higher costs: Single rooms are often more expensive. Costs for transport and excursions cannot be shared.
Fewer photos of yourself: There are not as many holiday photos of you, e.g. in front of sights.
No support in the event of illness: I can tell you from my own experience how bad it is to fall ill and not have anyone to help you.
